Frequently
asked questions
Common seller questions
add
Can I discuss my vehicle(s) or collection with you before signing up?

Yes, absolutely. Contact us now for a confidential discussion with no need to commit to an account.

add
How do I maximise the sale price of my car?

Our advice, proven by results, is to get a professional photographer to shoot your vehicle. We have a roster of trusted photographers at competitive rates (typically £100-£250). Ask your Auction Specialist when you consign your lot.

add
How do I submit my car and what happens after it's consigned?

You can submit your vehicle here. Once you submit, our auction team will review your submission and get back to you, typically within a business day. If we accept your vehicle for auction, an Auction Specialist will be assigned to you, who will work directly with you throughout the process, to assemble your listing based on the information you provide. If you have chosen XXXXX an Auction Specialist will arrange all the necessary photographs, media, marketing (and storage if required). Visit the ‘How to bid’ page for a more detailed tutorial.

add
Do you consign everything that you are offered?

No. Not every vehicle will be consigned. We choose which vehicles to list based on a number of factors, including condition, quality of information, quality/detail of photos, requested reserve price, and similar vehicles currently for sale. If you have an interesting vehicle with documented history, we will want help!

add
What information do I need to provide to Engine Notes?

Our lots are accurate representations of the vehicle, we love documented histories and even interesting stories attached to your vehicle as they bring together its story. Tell us as much as possible, even the less desirable things about the vehicle’s history or appearance. The more confidence a bidder has in a lot, the better the chance of a good sale. While Collecting Cars does perform some verification processes (including HPI and MOT checks in the UK), Collecting Cars shall not be liable to the seller or the buyer for any error or misstatement in or omission from the description of any Auction Lot.

add
Can I set a reserve/minimum selling price for my auction?

Engine Notes knows the market well. We always work with sellers to agree on the value of any reserve/minimum selling price. Like any auction, once a reserve is agreed upon, you may reduce it or withdraw it by written notice to Engine Notes. Please note that Engine Notes, at our own discretion, has the right to make up the difference between the highest bid and the reserve if the highest bid does not meet the reserve.

add
How long will it take for my vehicle to go live?

It can take a few days to a week to go from submission to live on the site. Professional photos could need to be taken, so the time may be a little longer depending on when the shoot is scheduled. The more information and photos you provide us during submission, the quicker the process goes. Please discuss with your Auction Specialist, we can expedite the process if required.

add
How long do auctions last?

Regular listings live on the site for 7 days, while Premium listings are live on the site between 7 and 21 days.

add
How do I take good photos of my car?

Great photos are very important to the success of an auction. We put together a photo guide to help you take photos of your vehicle, which you can see here. Alternatively, if your listing isn’t a Premium listing nothing compares to our roster of professional photographers, which our Auction Specialists are happy to arrange.

add
How do I edit my submission?

Please discuss with your Auction Specialist.

add
Can I cancel the auction once I have consigned my vehicle?

We do not cancel auctions once the vehicle has been consigned. We require listings to be exclusive to Engine Notes during that time, with all other ads taken down. If you do withdraw your car, you will be obliged to pay the fees in accordance with clause XX in the Terms and Conditions that would have been paid by the Buyer, calculated on the last reserve you agreed with Engine Notes or if none, a minimum charge as detailed in our fees section.

add
Do I need to make the vehicle available for viewings?

A high percentage of buyers will be willing to purchase an auction lot unseen because the lot is described in such detail that they have the confidence to do so. Others may request an inspection and we ask you to make the vehicle available if necessary. If there is significant interest in your lot, Engine Notes will contact you to arrange for a live-stream viewing and, possibly, a live-streamed auction.

add
My vehicle didn’t sell; can I relist it?

Generally speaking, we don’t like to relist any lots, but there are many occasions when the Auction team believes it can generate a sale in the market. Engine Notes has a number of ways to make sure your auction is successful. Buyers are prequalified and our PR/Media team is arguably the best in the business. If you find your vehicle didn’t sell, your Auction Specialist will call you to discuss. Your vehicle will continue being listed for a minimum of seven days at the reserve or an agreed ‘’buy it now’’ price. During that time, Engine Notes reserves the right to sell your vehicle in accordance with clause XX in the Terms and Conditions with fees calculated on the last reserve you agreed on with Engine Notes or, if none, a minimum charge as detailed in our fees section.

add
What happens after the auction, how do I get paid?

The transaction for the vehicle won on Engine Notes is between the buyer and seller. At the end of the auction, the winning bidder and seller will receive each other’s contact information via email. While the law prevents Engine Notes from being involved, we do very much care that sales are successful and stress-free, so if you have any issues, please contact your Auction Specialist.

Common buyer questions
add
How much does it cost to buy a vehicle on Engine Notes?

The sale price, as displayed at the end of the auction, is the amount you are paying for the vehicle and what will be paid to the seller. Engine Notes does charge a premium (see the fees section), but there are no further fees.

add
How can I contact the seller or inspect the lot during the auction?

We ask sellers to be prepared to make their vehicles available for inspection, so you can ask your Auction Specialist to arrange this if required. As per section XXX of our terms and conditions, buyers and sellers shall not engage in any activity designed to complete or facilitate a transaction for the sale or purchase of an auction outside of the site.

add
Can a bidder snipe other bidders at the end of the auction?

No, our platform guarantees fairness. Any bid received within the last 2 mins of the auction will automatically trigger a further 2 mins to be added. This will continue until bids are exhausted and the lot sells to the successful bidder.

add
Can I bid on a car from another country?

Yes. For UK residents, please refer to www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk and www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/paying-vat-and-duty. For buyers outside the UK, please check your country’s import laws and requirements for VAT, duties and taxes for imported cars prior to bidding.

add
What happens after the auction, how do I settle with the seller?

The transaction for the vehicle won on Engine Notes is between the buyer and seller. At the end of the auction, the winning bidder and seller will receive each other’s contact information via email. While the law prevents Engine Notes from being involved, we do very much care that sales are successful and stress-free, so if you have any issues, please contact your Auction Specialist.

add
What happens if the lot isn’t as expected and there are defects not mentioned in the listing?

As a bidder, it is your responsibility to be satisfied with the lot as described before placing a bid. All sales by traders made to consumers, whether sold by an individual or a business, do fall under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. The Act provides that they must meet certain minimum standards. If purchased from a trader, the sale item must be of “satisfactory quality”, be “as described” and be “fit for purpose”. So, items sold by traders must not be inherently faulty at the time of sale, allowing for the fact that they are second-hand, must match the description and allowing for factors like price, must be fit for their purpose. For more information in the UK please see www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer.

add
Can I buy a car that didn’t meet the reserve?

If a vehicle doesn’t sell in some cases, Engine Notes (at our own discretion) has the right to make up the difference between the highest bid and the reserve if the highest bid does not meet the reserve, therefore offering the vehicle to the highest bidder. Where a vehicle doesn’t sell, and you would like to discuss it, please contact us.
